Project

Meadville 1825: A Period of Community Formation

Description

In 1825, three churches were founded that exist to this day: Stone United Methodist Church, Christ Episcopal Church, and the UU Church of Meadville. In 1825, county leaders decided to build the first purpose-built courthouse. This suggests that the people of Meadville determined that this is a place they wanted to stay, and committed to building an enduring community. The Meadville 1825 committee was formed by members of the three churches celebrating their bicentennial in 2025 who wanted to know more about what was happening in 1825 that inspired people to build the institutions that would sustain the community for the next two hundred years.

Outcome

Research should produce one or more white papers responding to the questions outlined above. We would ask the researchers to offer one or more presentations to the community sharing their findings. Ideally, this presentation(s) would occur in November 2025 and serve as the culminating event of the Meadville 1825 series. (See https://www.facebook.com/meadville1825 for the full calendar of events as it currently exists.)
