Project

Land Access and Farming: Models of collective land ownership

Description

Our focus is on challenges of increasing land commodification and development pressures faced by rural farming communities that seek to increase access to, protect, or collectively manage land. We aim to increase land access among urban communities for food growth. In many neighborhoods, land is being bought, sold and leased by outside investors, which displaces local residents and harms the environment. The student will research existing land trust models in similar communities, identifying what worked and what didn’t, conduct interviews with local land trust organizers and community members to gather insights on their experiences, and analyze local laws and policies related to land ownership and cooperatives to identify potential obstacles or opportunities for collective land ownership in the community.

Outcome

A concise report of successful models of collective land ownership and key challenges and opportunities, and a document synthesizing insights from community interviews, surveys, and focus groups on land ownership needs and priorities. Additionally, a set of actionable recommendations tailored to the community’s needs, including steps for exploring or starting a land trust or cooperative, and a presentation of findings for community stakeholders.
