Project

Diversity in Clinical Trial Participation through Mobile Retina Clinics

Description

Erie Retina Research (ERR) is dedicated to conducting clinical trials for the advancement of eye disease treatments and expanding eye care for individuals in NWPA at no cost. Historically, clinical research has fallen short in representing patient demographic diversity, which has led to incomplete data collection and inequitable access to treatment options. ERR’s Mobile Retina Clinic (MRC) provides non-trial specific pre-screening services in easily accessible locations. ERR plans to carry out about 30 MRC events at community locations during the summer of 2025. The proposed project will improve access to cutting-edge ophthalmic care to eye disease patients at large and diversify ERR’s clinical trial ventures. Students will consider tactical improvements to public health inequities and shadow Dr. David Almeida, the CEO and Founder of ERR and a vitreoretinal surgeon.

Outcome

Screen at least 10 patients per clinic at 3 or 4 clinics per week with a mentor, keep in-depth records of patient and institutional diversity considering the identified areas in need of improvement, create strategies for patient recruitment, strengthen connections with community partners, educate about eye health and available services at events.
